C.O.M.E.T.

COMET stands for Construction Organizing Membership Education Training, and is a 4 hour training course that is used nationally by Building Trades local unions to train their membership in the importance of getting involved in helping their respective locals organize their industry and jurisdiction.

Once COMET training is complete, members are encouraged to get involved with organizing by becoming a volunteer organizer for their union, and help establish or join a local volunteer organizing committee (VOC). Depending on the size of the local and its jurisdiction, more than one VOC may need to be created in order to keep the VOC's actions relevant to local community needs and concerns.

The VOC(s) would consist of members who are willing to work with staff organizers and assist with nearly every aspect of organizing campaigns in their respective areas. These members can help with a variety of important activities, including:
  • Identifying unrepresented workers and potential organizing targets.
  • Researching primary and secondary targets.
  • House visits and phone calls to unrepresented workers.
  • Attending council meetings, demonstrations, hand-billing and picketing.
  • Outreach to other unions, churches, and community groups.
  • Newsletter and website development.
  • Recruiting other members for COMET classes, rallies, and mass meetings.
As the organizer for South-Bay Los Angeles, it is my intention to help establish a VOC in this section of local 105's jurisdiction. If you live in a city in my area and want to help create a committee please call me at my office at (909) 305-2800 ext. 540 and leave a message.

To sign up for C.O.M.E.T. training please call the local union at (909) 305-2800 to register your name for the next available class. Classes are typically held monthly on the Wednesday after the membership meeting from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the hall.

Thank You.
